It infuriated and confounded me as a missionary when faced with Born Agains who hid behind their “saved” status, paper shield that it was, claiming all they needed was faith. They’d just look at you dull-eyed when you quoted them Paul’s “faith without works is dead” (gee… my pastor didn’t quote that one, so it mustn’t be important– probably one of them Mormon traps). Faith without works is like living without doing– it isn’t.

I’m not very patient with tentative Mormons, either. Don’t even know why they bother.

You know, it’s funny… When I read your title for this entry, it looked like both a line from “Princess Bride” and transcribed Hebrew (which I studied in college).

Well, I had to put your high-falutin’ theory to the test, so I went to LDS.org and combed through all the articles talking about the metaphor of bride, bridegroom and guests, and you k now what? You’re right.

But I distinctly remember checking off “chicken” on the RSVP.

This reminds me of when I first arrived on my mission in North Carolina– this was in 1979, the year after President Kimball’s revelation. The mission president had us newbies over for dinner and afterward we retired to the living room where he imparted advice on how we should approach our imprending tasks at hand. One of the things he told us was NOT to tract the black neighborhoods. One of the elders got all indignant and asked, “Why not? They’re Heavenly Father’s children, too.” To which the MP, face all red, got into the kid’s face and shot back, “Elder, do you want to destroy this church faster than it was built?!”

And to quote the inimitable Elvis Costello:

Blame it on Cain.

Embrace it? Let’s put it this way-since learning of the practice, I have ranted, prayed, grimaced, read, and sort of “steeled” myself against the day IF it ever comes again. I think I would hate it in many ways, but not completely, and would ask the Lord to provide me with a personal witness that I/my family was supposed to live the law. Upon receiving one, I would submit to it and do the best I could to live it and be supportive.

It’s interesting, the agreement made between the U.S. Government and W. Woodruff has the Church/State promising to NEVER practice it again-ever to obtain statehood. Now, mind you, things like the Second Coming etc sort of overthrow all the “Earth” rules-and I cannot imagine the Lord making liars out of even His former prophets, so I’m hedging my bets and staying in Utah…just in case. LOL

What a well spelled-out explanation of the existence and status of polygamy in the Church. While I always believed something along these lines, my knowledge of the details had been smudgy. This entry will henceforth be my go-to whenever I lock horns on this subject.

So… when it’s reinstated, you’ll wholeheartedly embrace the doctrine. Right?

Oh, Hell Yeah, lady, I’m On to You. You seem to be under the impression Men Are So Easy to the Delirious Love of Hot August Nights. You can take it to the bank– I’m not just a Captain of a Shipwreck, I’m a bonafide Man of God and Mr. Diamond did his part to help Create Me as I Am, I Said. So, What’s It Gonna Be? Are you gonna Save Me a Saturday Night so We can geek around or are you gonna Face Me, Evermore, a woman too proud for the Beautiful Noise?

Now Back in LA, Captain Sunshine might be Beautiful Noise, but here where most people live Forever in Blue Jeans, not Everybody, especially this Lady, thinks he can Walk on Water. In other words, he is not the reason they are comin to America, If You Know What I Mean. And don’t think you can Play Me with any of that “Girl, You’ll Be a Woman Soon” crap or pretend that someday we’ll find Common Ground on this issue where I’ll say “I’m a Believer”. I mean seriously As If!

Now Dry Your Eyes, and Don’t Go Away Mad because I’m sure it won’t be like you are a Solitary Man, or some kind of Stranger in Paradise, but I’d hate to see you become A Fool All Over Again (and on Both Sides Now) or wish that you were Back Home Again in Indiana.

So I hope you realize that this is just a Mission of Love because As Time Goes By, (God Only Knows) I’m Afraid people will start to think that Deep Inside of You lives some kind of Gitchy Goomy, Kentucky Woman. I mean, I know It Don’t Seem Likely, but I Got The Feelin’ that loving him Like You Do, that you should Listen and not Make Believe that this Mama Don’t Know.
